Past Life Regression
As strange as it may sound, it is not necessary to believe in the concept of past lives for this approach to the unconscious mind to be beneficial or effective. The phenomenon may be understood in a variety of ways that are ecological and congruent with your accepted belief system. It can be understood as a multiple-life phenomenon typically known as reincarnation.
This is, however, not the only possible explanation. The PLR experience may also be understood as the mind's ability to connect to the Collective Unconscious (Jung), the Universal Mind, or the Akashic Records (Cayce), where all knowledge is stored. Or it is even possible to experience someone else's life from the first person perspective, sometimes called imprinting (Cannon). If that is too esoteric for your belief systems, well and good, then you may simply understand it as appropriate metaphor or meaningful symbolism that the mind utilizes in order to get your attention for the mental associations it makes between what it perceives as cause and symptom. Once the conscious mind makes the connection the symptoms usually lessen significantly or can disappear altogether. The PLR experience is very often associated with a strong emotional response which is typically cathartic in nature.
